“From our first meeting I recognized that Mark was passionate about the film and it’s message of hope. When he began to write, I felt that every note of his wonderful score was informed with energy, passion and a grand nobility. I remember many nights driving home from the edit room, listening to Mark’s score in the car, weeping uncontrollably as I drove up the driveway. He hit a nerve and wrote many cues that spoke directly to the sense of loss our country suffered when RFK was taken from us that June night in 1968. The thirteen minute piece which Mark concieved for the final moments of the picture are as devastating as anything written for a film in the past decade. It remains a monumental work that I am both humbled by and extremely proud of.

“Perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of working with Mark was that I always felt that I had an ally in him. When the studio was on him about what they felt the score should sound like, Mark always went to me first and checked in with my comfort level as far as changes. He is a director’s composer and worked tirelessly alongside me during some very challenging moments. I am grateful for his contribution to the film and I am in awe of his dedication to his art, and I feel honored to have had the opportunity to work with Mark in this lifetime.”

“Bobby” centers around the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy which occurred at a campaign stop in Los Angeles during his run for the presidency in 1968. Rather than focusing entirely on the man and the circumstances of his death, this film shows the events of that night by telling the stories of a selection of people who were present at the Ambassador Hotel and the ways in which Kennedy’s assassination touched each of them. There is enough star power in this one film to fuel 10 movies, as many of Hollywood’s elite came through to bring this passionate story to the screen. Laurence Fishburne, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins, Ashton Kutcher, Lindsey Lohan, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, and Sharon Stone are just a handful of the actors who lend their performances to this tale.

To create the proper atmosphere for this poignant film Mark strove to make a musical tapestry as rich and as varied as the complexly interwoven stories playing out on screen. To do this, he used a full orchestra with an extensive string section, which lends emotional power to the more poignant scenes of the film. Though primarily an orchestral score, Mark used electronic touches to create depth and add nuance to sections of the score. Mark described the music for the film this way: “The Bobby score has quite a broad range. It had to express not only the dream of a better world and hope for the society, as articulated by Bobby Kennedy, but also the unique eccentricities and compelling emotions of Emilio’s characters.”
